That the House of Representatives oppose the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System and Children and Young People’s Commission Bill (OOT) before the House, as it abolishes the Office of the Children’s Commissioner and not proceed with OOT until consideration of the final report of the Royal Commission into Abuse in State Care.
What is the reason for your petition?
The Royal Commission into Abuse in State Care is incomplete. The Children’s Commissioner has worked for 32 years as an independent statutory authority. The abolishment of the Children’s Commissioner removes independent, external monitoring of Oranga Tamariki. The OOT Bill’s proposed Children’s board would lose the ability to speak directly to the Prime Minister plus many of the Commissioner’s present powers of investigation. The Children’s Commissioner role must stay as it is,independent.
